Primavera Risk Analysis – Monte Carlo Method
Every activity that we do is subject to unsuspected events some of these upsetting events are not very severe and sometimes suspected and some of these impacts are not insignificant. If someone is bidding on doing some work in our very cost-driven society you will seldom or never win that job if you add a contingency for every item of work that you suspect will carry some level of risk. This is not to say that high-risk items should be ignored.
This is why we create what is called a risk register that forces you to brainstorm all the possible risk events that you can foresee and rate them based on various factors and estimate/calculate the level of risk, often stated as sensitivity. It is very important to come up with ways to deal with (or workaround) highly sensitive activities that are on your calculate driving critical path or near-critical paths, especially those that are near term.
The most popular and used method to find this information is Monte Carlo Analysis. Risk analysis software that uses this methodology will rerun your project many times using a random number generator to select activity durations within the parameters you set. The results of this process are represented in the screen capture below:
The most common way that most people will ask you about project completion is using a percentage accuracy of your answer. This begs the question of what is the level of certainty of your completion estimate. The above graph answers this question.
Oracle Primavera Risk® allows full project lifecycle risk analysis, the solution can integrate cost and schedule risk assessments. Primavera Risk Analysis provides a comprehensive means of determining confidence levels for project success together with quick and easy techniques for determining the risk critical path, suggested contingency and risk response plans.
By asking HSE to conduct an Oracle Primavera Risk analysis, you’ll have an unbiased view of the required contingency needed to account for cost and schedule uncertainty. It will also help you analyze the cost-effectiveness of planned risk response plans.
Combined, these form the basis of a “risk adjusted schedule,” which today is becoming the norm within the planning and scheduling process to help:
- Identify common scheduling pitfalls that may result in misleading schedule or risk analysis results, like overuse of constraints.
- Integrate predeveloped risk registers and define new risk registers
- Address full lifecycle risk management through advanced Monte Carlo-based cost and schedule analytics
- Report confidence levels with regards to finish dates, costs, total and free float, internal rate of return and net present value
Visio 2013 and newer versions provide new features designed to help you create diagrams more intuitively – including new and updated shapes and stencils, improved effects and themes, and a co-authoring feature that makes teamwork easier. You can also make your diagrams more dynamic by linking shapes to real-time data and then sharing them with others through a browser using Visio Services in SharePoint, even if they don’t have Visio installed.
Create and customize graphs that look professional by using a rich set of influences and topics expanded and improved by applying a different form entirely on your design with a single click or two clicks only replace any form (or set of forms) easily in the graph while maintaining connections to shape and define the data format and layout of your public.
Use a simple wizard to create a map of your org, and import data from Microsoft Excel or Exchange or Office.
Specifically designed for individuals who are looking for a basic system chart contains a rich set of compact stencils. This helps users simplify complex information through simple graphs that are easy to understand. Visio Standard includes the graphs for the network and the core business and organizational charts and flow charts and graphs basic general multi-purpose.
Oracle’s Primavera Unifier is the best-in-class project lifecycle management solution for capital planning, project delivery, cost control, and facilities and real estate management. It provides governance across all project phases, from planning and building to operations and maintenance. The Business Process Automation engine integrates critical business processes, data, and documents across the organization.

On-Screen TakeOff is a premier application that helps users complete projects on budget. This software is designed for users to manually and electronically “take off” the qualities of items to make more accurate bid estimations. This tool is extremely useful in regards to saving time. Primarily, users can measure, view, and annotate specifications on-screen rather than browsing through several plan pages.
Sketch-Up is an industry-leading 3D modeling software for project managers. It provides a wide variety of drawing applications for computer game outlines, architectural plans, standard & mechanical engineering, and even film. Many construction team members utilize Sketch-Up from the beginning phases of project design until the project’s completion.
