The FM diversion channel is a flood mitigation initiative aimed at protecting the cities of Fargo, North Dakota, Moorhead, and Minnesota from the recurrent threat of flooding. It’s designed to withstand such extreme flood events. The FM Area Diversion project includes multiple components. Which will protect the community from flooding by 2027. It’s designed to withstand a 100-year flood and provide fightable protection for a 500-year flood. The project is essentially a man-made waterway designed to divert excess floodwaters away from the cities and safely direct them to lower-lying areas or storage basins. The channel is equipped with associate structures which are 19 bridges, 2 aqueducts, 14 inlets & 1 outlets.
